Why do Miuccia Prada’s models look like they’ve never seen a hairbrush?

Every season, Miu Miu and Prada – both brands headed up by fashion designer and living legend Miuccia Prada – host runway shows where models have really messy hair. In a loose ponytail, frizzy on top, or backcombed for extra effect, Miuccia’s models look like they just rolled out of bed. But why? Where other fashion brands want their models to look pristine, why does Miuccia Prada go for the unkempt and untidy look?

It’s partly because Miuccia Prada’s known for what critics call “ugly chic,” an aesthetic she created that spotlights the beauty in the stereotypically “unattractive.” Her collections riff off hand-me-downs, blending the forgotten styles of different eras’ wardrobes, from clashing patterns and textures to outdated silhouettes.

But somehow they just work together. She also always emphasises individuality and personality on her runways, using styling to make each look feel like it fits a character in her head. Messy hair is just another characteristic of the girl Miuccia Prada imagines wearing her clothes. She’s stunning, well-dressed, and stylish, but also doesn’t have time to brush her hair in the morning, or simply can’t be bothered.
