Director Sofia Coppola has been working on a secret Marc Jacobs project. This morning it was announced that a new documentary, named Marc by Sofia (a little word play on Marc Jacobs’ now-extinct Marc by Marc Jacobs line), will premiere at the Venice Film Festival next month.
The Lost In Translation and Priscilla director has been a collaborator, muse and friend of the designer for decades at this point: she was shot by Juergen Teller in 2002 for Marc’s signature fragrance, she worked with Marc on bag collection during his time at LV, she starred in his FW15 campaign, she collabed with him for Heaven by Marc Jacobs, and directed his Daisy perfume campaign. Can’t think of a better director for the job.

Born in NYC in 1963, the American designer graduated from Parsons, where he was the youngest designer to receive the CFDA’s Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent. In 1992, he showed his notorious grunge collection for Perry Ellis (which famously got him fired, as he was too groundbreaking for the time). He was the creative director at Louis Vuitton from 1997 until 2013, being the CD during the OG collab with Takashi Murakami, among many other collaborations (a concept which he lowkey pioneered at the time), and being the brains behind the LV graffiti bag. He’s also worked on his Marc Jacobs line since 1984, and launched his MJ sister line Heaven in 2020.
“When I first met Marc, we hit it off right away,” Coppola wrote in the introduction of Phaidon book Marc Jacobs Illustrated. “I had met great designers before, but here was someone easy to talk to, in beat-up Stan Smiths, who liked the same bands and artists and had the same appreciation and sense of humour about the idea of being ‘lady-like’.”
This will be Sofia Coppola’s first documentary, telling the story of her friend Marc Jacobs. We don’t know any more details tbh.
