Thirty years of Acne Studios' denim isn’t enough

Stockholm-founded Acne Studios just celebrated three decades of dominating runways, wardrobes, and editorials with a new campaign lensed by Nan Goldin, featuring Acne’s friends and family.

Since launching in 1996, Acne Studios has became a cult favourite, loved by the likes of Kylie Jenner, Pinkpantheress, Rihanna, and more. Now, to celebrate their ongoing impact, co-founder and creative director Jonny Johansson has curated a campaign spotlighting Acne Studios’ foundational material: denim.

Working with American photographer and activist Nan Goldin, Johansson envisioned a shoot that celebrates Acne’s heritage and its community. "The subjects are people from our universe,” he explained, “I wanted friends, not models.” The list of names includes musician Ellie Rowsell, artist Jonathan Lyndon Chase, actor Rila Fukushima, and more.

Each of the campaign’s subjects appears in an intimate portrait, wearing Acne Studios’ denim, in an effort to portray “the idea of denim as something lived in.” Jonny explained. “Denim is part of my everyday wear inside the studio, or out for dinner. I love its multifaceted materiality.”
